New Paltz Nation Editorial Staff Endorses:

Some Green Some Blue

The New Paltz Nation editorial staff proudly endorses several State and Federal Candidates in New York, some Green, some Blue.

One of the most important races we face as a region is the unseating of conservative Republican John Bonacic from his not so well-worn seat on the New York State legislator and replacing him with his Democratic challenger, Susan Zimet [D-New Paltz] currently Ulster County Legislator and former two-term supervisor of New Paltz.

Zimet helped lead New Paltz in their successful fight against a proposed mega-mall with Walmart as its anchor store in the mid-1990’s. Since that time, Zimet has come out in strong support of open-space initiatives, same-sex marriage equality, the need to boost our economy with arts, culture and eco-tourism as well as fighting in Albany successfully to get a bill passed by both the Senate and Assembly that would allow for New York State Veterans to be tested for traces of Depleted Uranium [a cancer-causing toxin used in US and English ammunition, tanks and shells in both the First Gulf War and the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq] and treated if they test positive.

Zimet will bring a greatly needed breath of fresh air to Albany which has stagnated on property-tax reform, same-sex equality, education reform, proper treatment of veterans, and yes, even passing their budgets on time.

This is one powerful underdog who needs our support. Go Zimet, Go!

NPN also endorses Congressman Maurice Hinchey [D-Hurley.] Hinchey has long been fighting the neo-cons in Washington and has been one of the lone voices opposing the war since its inception. He has challenged the Bush administration on their manipulated and falsified evidence, presented to Congress and the American people as rationale for their pre-emptive, illegal war in Iraq. He has called repeatedly for investigations into the Downing Street Memos, Bush’s authorization of the NSA domestic wiretapping program, illegal use of torture, as well as the Federal Communication Commission’s increasing push to allow the conglomeritization of corporate media.

 Give em’ hell, Hinchey!

The NPN Editorial staff has long supported writer, actor, activist, Malachy McCourt—the Green Party’s gubernatorial candidate for Governor of New York. McCourt claims that “we need more tress and less Bushes!” Unlike his Democratic challenger, Elliot Spitzer, McCourt is opposed to the death penalty, in favor of same-sex marriage equality, and promises to use the National Guard to guard against corporate crimes rather than letting them be killed in an illegal war in Iraq.

 Go Malachy  Go!

We also endorse Green Party candidate for New York State Senate, Howie Hawkins, who, unlike his Democratic challenger, Senator Hillary Clinton, is a peace candidate. A veteran of war, Hawkins understands what true patriotism is, and although Clinton refuses to enter debates with Democratic primary challengers or Green Party candidates, she does proudly accept corporate donations from Rupert Murdoch, pharmaceutical companies, and sat on the board of WalMart for several years. She has voted lock-step with the Bush neo-con agenda for regime change in the Mid-East, does not support same-sex marriage, nor universal health care. In fact, Hillary Clinton, has compromised so much over the years to achieve the Democratic candidacy for President of the United States, that she no longer stands for much at all. Hawkins, at the very least, needs to rally voters to remind Clinton of how very far she has strayed from her own purported values and the values of her progressive Democratic constituents.

 Go Howie go!

Beyond these endorsements, the NPN editorial staff encourages everyone to get out and vote. Vote your values, vote for change, vote to save our Democracy.

 Go get em’ voters!

Sincerely,

Erin Quinn
